Cancer Survivors Park

In September 2006, City Council approved the development of a Cancer Survivors Park on City-owned land at 1480 Alta Vista Drive.

This location is a 1.38 ha property bounded by Riverside Drive, Industrial Avenue and Alta Vista Drive. The City of Ottawa will lease the site to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation for a $1/year in perpetuity and provide support with capital financing and basic park maintenance.

The Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation (ORCF) has become a partner and will assume the lead and responsibility for all aspects of project and facility management, including planning, fundraising, design, construction, maintenance, operations and lifecycle investment and replacement. Additionally the ORCF has signed a charitable donation agreement in the amount of $1,150,000 CND with the R. A. Bloch Cancer Foundation for the project.

As project costs have been estimated at $2.5M, the ORCF and a committed team of community leaders have worked diligently to complete the detailed design of the Park and solicit donations of funds, materials and services in-kind from local businesses.

I have supported this project from the very beginning and endeavoured to provide additional City financial support for the Park by directing Cash-in-Lieu of Parkland fees attributable to approved development projects in Alta Vista Ward for the implementation of the Park. A total of $227,305 in Cash-in-Lieu of Parkland funds was collected in support of the implementation of the Park.

The Cancer Survivors Park was recently opened.
