Alta Vista Transportation Corridor

In September 2005 City Council unanimously forwarded the completed Alta Vista Transportation Corridor (AVTC) Environmental Assessment to the Ontario Minister of the Environment for approval. Ministerial approval was subsequently granted on January 24th 2008.

The detailed design process for the first stage of the Alta Vista Transportation Corridor, the Hospital Link, is currently underway. As part of this process the City of Ottawa is currently collecting soil data, mapping underground infrastructure and consulting with rail companies.

This process will review the design pros and cons related to the options of either a below- or at-grade intersection of the AVTC Hospital Link and Alta Vista Drive, as well as the location of the link to the hospital ring road.

The Environmental Assessment considered the project need, existing environmental conditions, alternative solutions and their evaluations, alternative designs, and recommended a preferred design along with project staging. Figure 8-1 of the Environmental Assessment, which outlines the hospital link, clearly identifies that the connection to the hospital ring road could be located in a more westerly location than identified subject to the detailed design. As previously outlined in 2005, I will be pursuing this option during the detailed design.

The report lays out the justification for AVTC Hospital Link (Stage 1):

The purpose of the Hospital Link portion of the AVTC is to provide a transportation link from Riverside Drive and the Southeast Transitway easterly to the Ottawa Hospital Complex. This link is needed to improve transit service to the area and to accommodate projected growth in vehicle travel demand related to ongoing development of the Ottawa Hospital Complex, including the NDMC Lands.

I invite you to review the entire report.
